Dear Families,

We are so delighted to have our students back in the building and to welcome those who are joining King George School for the first time. The energy and joy our students bring each day truly makes our school come alive. On Wednesday, we gathered as a school community for our Welcome Back assembly, where we introduced staff and reviewed school expectations. Please review The Student Code of Conduct with your child(ren). We will be reviewing this with students and staff throughout the year: Student Code of Conduct.

Thank you to all families who joined us for our teacher orientation sessions yesterday—it was wonderful to see you and have the opportunity to connect. If you were unable to meet your child’s teacher, please feel free to reach out to them directly, and they will be happy to set up a time to meet.

Staffing Update

We would like to welcome our new Assistant Principal, Cathy Johnson to King George School.  Mme Cathy is coming off a leave of absence and has a gradual return to work schedule before returning to full-time duties.  During this time, I am pleased to announce that Mme Shannah will be acting Assistant Principal to fill in when Mme Cathy is not in the building and to support the transition when Mme Cathy is at school.   Mme Cathy and Mme Shannah, along with Mme Allison will all work closely together to best support student learning.

Student Safety

Morning entry and afternoon dismissal are busy times at our school! To ensure our school is a safe place for everyone, please make sure to follow the safety measures below:

  • Follow the safety patrollers' signs and signals at the 9th street crosswalk when they begin their duties later this month.
  • The “Kiss and Go” on 9th street is for Grades 1-5 students ONLY.

How to use the Kiss and Go space:

1) Drive up, and park only as long as it takes to let your child out, kiss your child, wish them a good day and drive away (approx. 2 minutes max).

2) You must not leave your car.

3) When pulling up to the Kiss & Go, please drive slowly and with extra caution.

4) Please pull as far up as you can to allow others space.

  •  If you wish to wait in the school grounds with your child prior to school starting, or if you are a Kindergarten parent who must walk their child to the doors, you must park on side streets, or where parking is permissible. We appreciate your cooperation!
  • The staff parking lots are for staff only. It is never permitted to use the staff parking lots for drop-off or pick-up.  This is unsafe. Please use the designated kiss and go or surrounding street parking.  There is a designated Handicap Parking Spot in our 20th  ave parking lot for those who have accessibility needs only.
  • Walk with your child on the sidewalks and not through the parking lots.
  • Do not pull up in front of the school on 10th street to drop off your child.  Parking is not permitted here. It is a bus lane and bike lane only.
  • Bussed students: We take attendance in the afternoon, for each bus, before they depart. We expect your child to be on the bus, unless it is indicated that they are absent or being picked up.  If your child will not be taking the bus in the afternoon, please let the office know. Otherwise, we hold up all the buses and follow the lost child protocol until we know your child is accounted for. Our buses have other routes after they drop off our students and must stick to their schedule. We appreciate your help with getting our students to where they need to go safely and on time.

Attendance

The Calgary Board of Education recognizes the strong positive correlation between attendance and a student’s success in school.

  • By grade 3, students with chronic absenteeism are less likely to read at grade level
  • By grade 6, chronic absenteeism puts student at risk of not completing high school
  • By grade 9, regular attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than test scores

Regular attendance sets students on the path to reaching their full potential. At CBE we use a whole school approach to attendance to strategically allocate our resources and create a positive culture where students feel a sense of belonging.

Please read AR6020 for more information on attendance: https://www.cbe.ab.ca/GovernancePolicies/AR6020.pdf#search=Attendance

Personal Mobile Devices (PMDs)

We have had some questions around students bringing their Personal Mobile Devices (PMDs) to school.  This is a friendly reminder that, according to Administrative Regulation (AR) 6008:

1)Students may not use PMDs during instructional time, unless such use is approved by the classroom teacher to facilitate learning activities. 2) Students may not access social media on school networks or on school devices. 3) Student PMDs are valuable electronic devices. The security and storage of these items is the sole responsibility of the owner or user. CBE assumes no responsibility for the safety, security, loss, repair or replacement of student PMDs. 4) Notwithstanding 6(3), student PMDs that are taken temporarily from students by teachers or administrators must be securely stored.

Please read/review AR 6008 for more information on this directive:
