Dear KGS families,
We were so proud of our whole school community yesterday during our Terry Fox run. The students and staff worked hard to meet our goal of running 3, 000 km as a whole school. Our Goal was to raise double the number of kilometers ran. To date we have run 2, 236 km and have raised $4,202.40 to donate to the Terry Fox Foundation for cancer research. This is amazing and we are so thankful to our school community and all those who were able to donate. Some of our students will be running next week to make up the 764 km to work toward reaching our goal donations. We have only $1, 798 more dollars to raise to meet our goal of $ 6, 000.
Thank you to our volunteers who came out and supported us during this important event.
Orange Shirt Day
Today we acknowledged Orange Shirt Day by wearing orange shirts and participating in a variety of different learning activities. Our Truth and Reconciliation Assembly for students and staff will be on Wednesday October 1, 2025.
There are many events happening in Calgary on Truth and Reconciliation Day, Tuesday September 30. If you are interested in learning more about these events, please visit our website here.
National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Sept. 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day, intended to respond to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) Call to Action No. 80 and honor the experiences and resilience of Indigenous children and communities by commemorating and raising awareness about the painful legacy of Canada's residential school system. This year marks 10 years since the TRC released its final reports and 94 Calls to Action.
Within CBE’s Education Plan, we have committed to "Advance the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action (Education for ReconciliACTION).” In remembrance of the children and survivors of the residential schools, CBE recognizes the importance of commitment to continued learning, growth and respectful honouring of Indigenous ways of being, belonging, doing and knowing.
Each school year, CBE schools develop and share their Truth and Reconciliation Commitment to Action with their communities. Alongside these commitments, schools integrate Indigenous ways of being, belonging, doing, and knowing throughout the Alberta curriculum. This includes Indigenous land-based learning, engaging with texts by Indigenous authors and exploring Indigenous languages and histories. Schools also work to build students’ self-connection by fostering intercultural understanding and creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for Indigenous students.
Safety Week EXTENDED –October 1 - October 10
We are looking for volunteers for Safety Week, specifically during morning entry, to help keep our school safe. If you're interested in volunteering, please sign up here.
The purpose of this week is to increase awareness in King George community about safety as we navigate around the school. We will have parent volunteers monitoring high traffic areas throughout the week. This includes making safe decisions in the following high-traffic areas, such as:
- Please drive slowly through the area around school.
- Patrol crosswalk: Respecting the patroller’s space, listening to their cues and using the crosswalk to cross the street.
- Kiss n Go drop off area: Using this as a quick (maximum 2 minute) drop off space and not leaving your vehicle. This is not a parking area.
- 10th Street Bus Zone: Leaving this space for buses only. This is not a drop off location.
- Staff Parking lots are for staff only. It is not a pickup or drop off area. Please model and teach your child not to walk through the parking lots as these are not safe for children.
- Neighborhood Lanes: Respect our neighbours and try to avoid the back lanes in the blocks near the school, if you must please drive slowly and do not park in the lanes or private parking spaces.
- Use the crosswalks to cross 9th street and 10th street.
- Walk your bike on the school grounds.
- No parking within 5m of a crosswalk or stop sign. This 5m space is marked on 21 Ave by the painted curb.
When possible, we encourage families to park and walk to school. This limits traffic around the school, and is a great opportunity to get moving!
We hope Safety Week will give our community time to reflect on how we can work together to keep students safe at school and when traveling to and from school, and to reflect about healthy alternatives and all their benefits. Thank you to our School Council for their work and support in keeping our school safe!
