Sept. 25-29 Update | Litterless Lunches, Lost & Found, IPPs, Orange Shirt Week, Volunteer
Dear families of King George School,
We started the week off with our Terry Fox Run. We were so proud of our students who did their best to run/walk laps around our fields and met or even beat their personal goals. Thank you to all families who donated “Toonies for Terry”. We will announce our grand total next week. Thank you to all those who came out to volunteer and support the run.
We were also happy to see so many of our families come out to our “Meet the Teacher” night and thank you to all those who stopped at our School Council Table to learn more and sign up to help. If you are interested in volunteering in any capacity, you can email our school council at kgschoolcouncil@gmail.com for more information.
Litterless Lunches
We encourage families to pack Litterless Lunches as much as possible. We are sending all food and waste/garbage home. We encourage students to recycle and compost when they get home from school. This also allows parents to see how much of their child’s lunch is being eaten and what is being left behind. If any student requires more time to eat their lunch, they will always be provided with a supervised space where they can finish at their own pace, before heading outside for recess.
Lost & found
Our lost and found is quickly accumulating. We ask that you write the name of your child’s name on clothing and personal belongings. Our Lunchroom support staff does their best to return clothing items to their owner as soon as possible. If items are not claimed, they are donated to charity at the end of every month.
Individual Program Plan (IPP) Review
If your child is on an IPP, your child’s teacher will communicate with you in the next week regarding the first review. At this time of year, teachers review all assessments and establish new targets and strategies. In some cases, previous targets and strategies will continue. The IPP will be shared with families by October 13. Please take the time to look over the IPP and sign the signature page, which needs to be returned to the classroom teacher.
Orange Shirt Week – September 25-29
Every year, we recognize Orange Shirt Day on September 30. It started in 2013, when residential school survivor Phyllis Webstad shared how her orange shirt was taken away from her on her first day at residential school. This story offers an opportunity for us to reflect on the lasting impacts residential schools had on indigenous people in Canada. It also supports our ongoing work for truth and reconciliation.
In the spirit of reconciliation and hope, all CBE schools will be acknowledging Orange Shirt Week. We have planned activities and learning opportunities for students throughout the week as we engage in purposeful learning. The intention of the week is to recognize and honour residential school survivors, their families and communities. On Thursday September 28, we ask that all students wear an orange shirt to school to acknowledge Orange Shirt Day.
Please note that Friday, Sept. 29 will be a non-operational day to commemorate truth and reconciliation across the Calgary Board of Education. This means there will be no classes and schools and workplaces will be closed for the day.
Volunteer PIC Costs
Thank you to those that are able volunteers in our school and classrooms. To volunteer your time, you must first complete a CBE Volunteer Clearance. Please note that there is now a fee of $21.25, which is charged during the application process. For more information on the volunteer clearance process, please call the front office.
