Dear Families

It was wonderful to see such a wonderful turnout at our first School Council Meeting. Thank you all for your support.

We are looking forward to participating in the Terry Fox run next week. Please refer to our school website for details about this important event.

Terry Fox Run

We are looking forward to participating in the Terry Fox run on Thursday September 25. Our goal is to help Terry finish his run by running 3000 laps as a whole school. We are hoping to raise double the amount of money as the laps that we run. You can help us achieve our goal of 6000$ and find more information via: https://schools.terryfox.ca/98059.

We are still looking for volunteers to help with the event. In order to volunteer, you require a valid CBE Police Clearance. If you would like to volunteer, you can email your child’s teacher directly or Mme Shannah via email: shernest@cbe.ab.ca

Volunteers must sign in at the main office and will receive a visitor’s pass. The race will be held from approximately 1:15 – 2:15pm.

Orange Shirt Day | Friday Sept. 26

September 30 is Orange Shirt Day & National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. At King George School we encourage all staff and students to wear orange on Friday, Sept. 26. Orange Shirt Day serves as an annual time to reflect on the history and legacy of residential schools. Originating from Phyllis Webstad’s account of her first day at St. Joseph Mission residential school where her new orange shirt, a reminder of home, was taken, this day is an acknowledgement of Canada’s past and time to hold hope for a future where Every Child Matters. Outdoor Bells

Outdoor Bells are currently not working.  We have had the technician in and he has ordered the part we need. As soon as the part arrives, the technician will have the bells fixed.  The bells inside the school do work and the fire alarm bells are also functioning properly.  For now, staff are using whistles as the signal to come inside.

Safety Week | September 29 - October 3

It’s Safety Week at King George School! The purpose of this week is to increase awareness in King George community about safety as we navigate around the school. We will have parent volunteers monitoring high traffic areas throughout the week. This includes making safe decisions in the following high-traffic areas, such as:

  • Please drive slowly through the area around school.
  • Patrol crosswalk: Respecting the patroller’s space, listening to their cues and using the crosswalk to cross the street.
  • Kiss n Go drop off area: Using this as a quick (maximum 2 minute) drop off space and not leaving your vehicle. This is not a parking area.
  • 10th Street Bus Zone: Leaving this space for buses only. This is not a drop off location.
  • Staff Parking lots are for staff only. It is not a pickup or drop off area. Please model and teach your child not to walk through the parking lots as these are not safe for children.
  • Neighborhood Lanes: Respect our neighbours and try to avoid the back lanes in the blocks near the school, if you must please drive slowly and do not park in the lanes or private parking spaces.
  • Use the crosswalks to cross 9th street and 10th street.
  • Walk your bike on the school grounds.
  • No parking within 5m of a crosswalk or stop sign. This 5m space is marked on 21 Ave by the painted curb.

When possible, we encourage families to park and walk to school. This limits traffic around the school, and is a great opportunity to get moving!

We hope Safety Week will give our community time to reflect on how we can work together to keep students safe at school and when traveling to and from school, and to reflect about healthy alternatives and all their benefits. Thank you to our School Council for their work and support in keeping our school safe!

We are looking for volunteers for Safety Week, specifically during morning entry to keep our school safe. If you're interested in volunteering, please sign up here.

Looking for Volunteers to help with Fun Lunch

We will be starting Healthy Hunger on September 25. Throughout the year, we will be ordering from McDonald’s, Panago, Banzai, Subway and Opa. This is a fundraiser for the King George School Council, and money raised will go back to supporting projects within the school.

To order, create an account at Healthy Hunger. The deadline is always 5 days before the delivery date. The deadline for this order is Saturday, September 20.

We are looking for volunteers to help with the sorting of the orders and delivery to the various classrooms. If you have a valid CBE Police Clearance and would like to help out, please sign up here.
