Sept. 18-22 Update | Morning Entry, Open House, Terry Fox Run, French for Parents, Truth & Reconciliation/Orange Shirt Day Event
Dear families of King George School. We had our first full week of school for this school year, and it went great! Today we were able to get together as a school community to have a brief welcome assembly for our students. It was an opportunity to welcome new students as well as new staff to KGS and introduce most of our staff. We also reviewed KGS school expectations and what it means to be a respectful member of our school community. PM kindergarten joined us for their first assembly, and we are looking forward to having our AM kindergarten student join us for our Terry fox assembly next week.
Morning Entry
Families are reminded that the Instructional minutes begin when the bell rings at 8:00 am. Students are able to enter the school from 7:50 am to 8:00am. Doors will be closed at 8:00 am sharp, allowing teachers on supervision to be in their classrooms on time, and all teachers to take attendance and begin instruction. If you arrive at the doors after 8:00am, they will be locked, and you must walk your child to the office to check in. Thank you for your cooperation.
Open House - September 21
You are invited to meet your child’s teacher in person on September 21 at 6:00 pm OR 6:45 pm to learn more about the academic, social, and well-being goals for this year. You will also have a chance to learn about your child’s classroom routines and expectations. Each session will run for approximately 30 minutes. The location of the presentation will be shared by your child’s classroom teacher. Please note that some grade groups will be presenting as a team.
You will have to use the Conference Booking through MyCBE to sign up for a time slot. You are invited to come to the school at either 6:00 pm OR 6:45 pm. Your child's teacher will provide more information in their weekly message about the location of the session.
We encourage only parents to come to the open house on Thursday as teachers will be covering a lot of information in a short amount of time. There will not be any childcare on site for this event.
Terry Fox Run – September 19
On Tuesday September 19th, our whole school will participate in the Terry Fox Run to support Terry’s cause. We are raising money through the “Toonie for Terry” fundraiser for cancer research. If you’re interested in volunteering, you can reach out to your child’s teacher! You must have a valid police clearance with the CBE to participate.
If your child is in PM Kindergarten, they are invited to join the Terry Fox Run from 9:30 AM – 10:15 AM. Parents will have to stay with their PM Kindergarten student during this time and bring their child back to school for their regular PM Kindergarten start time.
Chinook Learning Services - French for Parents
Chinook Learning Services offers courses specifically designed for parents and caregivers of CBE French Immersion students. For Fall 2023, Chinook Learning Services is once again offering French for Parents – Level 1 classes. This eight-week course will help parents of bilingual students learn or refresh their French language skills, build their network of bilingual parents and support their children’s learning at home.

Government Assessments
The Provincial government requires that all students in grades 2 and 3 complete a literacy and numeracy assessment prior to September 28. These assessments are used to see where students are in order to plan for appropriate support moving forward. If your child is in grade 2 or 3, they will have started these assessments. Teachers in all grades will generally assess students either formally or informally during this time in order to plan for learning. This is a standard practice in our schools.
National Day for Truth and Reconciliation & Orange Shirt Day Event - Sept. 30
CBE students, staff and their families and friends are invited to join an event being hosted by the City of Calgary in partnership with the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Catholic School District. The third annual ceremonial opening is taking place on Sept. 30 from 9-10:30 a.m. at Fort Calgary (750 9th Ave SE). This year's gathering will include a smudge tent, in-person Indigenous speakers and performers, an aerial salute ceremony, and other events. The events will also include an intertribal dance demonstration featuring Indigenous students from the CBE and CCSD. Participants are encouraged to wear orange.
Following the YYC, CBE & CCSD event, all are invited to join the Pokaiks – The Children Commemorative Annual Walk and Gathering 2023. The walk will begin at 11 a.m. at City Hall (15-minute walk from Fort Calgary or 2-minute drive) and continue to Shaw Millenium Park (30-minute walk). The walk will be followed by drumming/dancing, Indigenous community speakers, artisan booths, and food sales.
