Dear families,

Thank you to all the families that were able to join us for our Open House/Meet the teacher evening last night.  Our Learning Conferences are coming up on October 24th & 25th, which will be an opportunity for you to meet 1:1 with your child's teacher - more information to come!

Entry Bell – NEW Warning Bell

To support students, we are going to begin ringing a warning bell at 7:56 AM in the morning, to offer a two-minute warning before doors close.

Terry Fox Run - September 20

On Friday September 20, our whole school will participate in the Terry Fox Run to support Terry’s cause. We are raising money through the “Toonie for Terry” fundraiser for cancer research. If you’re interested in volunteering, you can reach out to your child’s teacher! You must have a valid police clearance with the CBE to participate.

If your child is in PM Kindergarten, they are invited to join the Terry Fox Run from 9:30 AM – 10:15 AM. Parents will have to stay with their PM Kindergarten student during this time and bring their child back to school for their regular PM Kindergarten start time.

Safety Week – September 16-20

It’s Safety Week at King George School! The purpose of this week is to increase awareness in King George community about safety as we navigate around the school. We will have parent volunteers monitoring high traffic areas throughout the week. This includes making safe decisions in the following high-traffic areas, such as:

  • Patrol crosswalk: Respecting the patroller’s space, listening to their cues and using the crosswalk to cross the street.
  • Kiss n Go drop off area: Using this as a quick (maximum 2 minute) drop off space and respecting the street signs. This is not a parking area.
  • 10th Street Bus Zone: Leaving this space for buses only. This is not a drop off location.
  • Staff Parking lots are for staff only. It is not a pickup or drop off area. Please model and teach your child not to walk through the parking lots as these are not safe for children.
  • Neighborhood Lanes: Do not use the lanes in the blocks near the school.
  • Use the crosswalks to cross 9th street and 10th street.
  • Walk your bike on the school grounds.
  • No parking within 5m of a crosswalk or stop sign. This 5m space is marked on 21 Ave by the painted curb.

When possible, we encourage families to park and walk to school. This limits traffic around the school, and is a great opportunity to get moving! Here is a traffic map of the area around King George School, highlighting the park and walk area:

We will also be practicing our emergency drills with students this week. We will have a Fire Drill Wednesday afternoon, and a Lockdown Drill with Calgary Police Services on Thursday afternoon.

We hope Safety Week will give our community time to reflect on how we can work together to keep students safe at school and when traveling to and from school, and to reflect about healthy alternatives and all their benefits. Thank you to our School Council for their work and support in keeping our school safe!

We are looking for volunteers for Safety Week, specifically during morning entry to keep our school safe. If you're interested in volunteering, please sign up here
