Oct. 9-13 Update | Attendance, Secret Path Week, Subscribe to Messages, Halloween Dance
Dear families of King George School,
Walk to school week was a great success, especially on our Walk to School Day Wednesday. It was wonderful to see families walking, biking and scooting to school. A big thank you to our grade five students and teachers and members of our school council for organizing this event! We ask that you take a couple of minutes to complete this feedback survey about the day. Thank you!
This week our grade 4 and 5 students engaged in OURSchool Student survey, which is completed by all students from grade 4 to 12 in the CBE. This data helps to inform our staff on how we can better support our learners' day to day and in the development of our School Development Plan. As a staff we work collaboratively to develop our school learning goals for the school year in the areas of Literacy, Mathematics and Well-being. The school Development plan will be finalized and posted on November 30. Parents/guardians are welcome to attend our School Council meetings to learn more about how we support our students every day at King George School. The next meeting is Thursday October 19.
Regular Attendance
Regular school attendance has a huge impact on a student’s academic success starting in kindergarten and continuing through high school. Even as children grow older and more independent, families play a key role in making sure students get to school safely every day and understand why attendance is so important for success in school and in life.
We realize some absences are unavoidable due to health problems or other circumstances. When students miss too much school it can cause them to fall behind academically. Regular school attendance is an important life skill on the path to graduation and future employment.
Did you know?
- By grade 3, students with regular attendance are more likely to read at grade level.
- By grade 6, regular attendance is a predictor of high school completion.
- By grade 9, regular attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than test scores.
Please ensure that your child attends school every day and arrives on time. Here are a few practical tips to help support regular attendance:
- Listen and show an interest in your child’s day.
- Encourage your child to do well in school and praise their success.
- Help your child maintain daily routines such as, eating breakfast, turning off electronics two hours before bedtime and going to bed early.
- If possible try to schedule dental and medical appointments after school hours or on days off from school.
- Send your child to school unless sick.
- It may be a concern if your child is often sick, complains about going to school and/or struggles with school work.
- Ask for help from the school before the problem gets too big. No problem is too small.
Let us know how we can best support you and your child so they can attend school regularly and punctually.
Secret Path Week – October 17 – 22
Secret Path Week is a national movement commemorating the legacies of Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack. King George School is a Downie & Wenjack Fund Legacy School, as we have made a commitment to recognize Secret Path Week each year and educate our school community about the history of residential schools. Our students will be participating in the Walk for Wenjack to honour Chanie’s legacy and raise awareness of the true history of residential schools. Students will also participate in various classroom activities to learn more about reconciliACTION.

We Need Your Help!!!
Volunteer
In order to run the event, we need MANY volunteers!! You must have a valid security clearance in order to volunteer. Please watch your email for the sign-up sheet to work a 30-minute shift at the dance and / or donate bottles water.
Pizza Pre-Order
Only water and cookies will be available for purchase at the dance.
Pizza from Panago can be ordered through www.healthyhunger.ca and picked up that evening in your children’s classroom. If you’ve never ordered on Healthy Hunger before, you will need to create an account.... which is quick and easy. Gluten free and dairy free options are available. Kindergarten parents who don’t normally order fun lunch can create an account and order pizza for the night of the dance. There will be a designated classroom set up for each grade for families to retrieve their pizza from. If you have multiple children, we encourage you to put your order through under one child so that all of your pizza will be available in one classroom.
LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING YOU ALL THERE!
