Oct. 2-6 Update | Truth & Reconciliation, Demographics, Volunteers, Toonies for Terry, Walk to School Day, Retakes
Dear Families of King George School
Today our staff and students wore orange shirts to acknowledge Orang Shirt Day. Truth and Reconciliation is part of our ongoing work and commitment as a school community to the TRC Calls to Action. This week we honoured Truth and Reconciliation week through various learning activities with students and teachers such as:
- Each student and staff placed an orange ribbon, on the fence, forming the shape of a heart, as a symbol to remind us that Every Child Matters.
- A gallery Walk in our Learning Commons of student work to share what we have been learning about with each other.
- Teachers read the book Trudy’s Rock Story/Le Caillou de Trudy, knowledge keeper Trudy Spiller shares her teachings of how we can use Mother Earth to help us process our emotions. Each class was gifted a rock that will be part of their learning throughout the year. Each class will gift this rock back to Mother Earth in our rock garden in June.
Schools are closed on Friday September 29 in lieu of the National Day for Truth & Reconciliation (Orange Shirt Day), which is observed on September 30. This day is dedicated to honouring the children who never returned home from residential schools, the survivors, and their families and communities. Schools can choose to wear their orange shirts any day between Sept. 25 to 28.
CBE staff and their families and friends are invited to attend a public commemorative event hosted by the City of Calgary in friendship with CBE and the Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD). The third annual ceremonial event is on Sept. 30 from 9-10:30 AM at Fort Calgary.
This year's gathering will include in-person speakers and performers, a live stream broadcast, an aerial salute ceremony, and other events. The event will consist of an intertribal dance demonstration from CBE and CCSD students. More information on the event is available on the City’s website. Public commemoration of residential schools' tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts is vital to reconciliation.

Walk to School Day – October 4 – ROAD CLOSURE
October 4th is Walk to School Day! To encourage active transportation to school, the Kiss and Go (9th street, from 20th AVE NW to 21st AVE NW) will be closed for the day. Our Grade 5 students have been mapping walking/biking routes to school that families can use on this day, and throughout the year! Our Grade 5 students recommend parking at the Mount Pleasant Community Centre, the St. Joseph Park - Off Leash Dog Park or the Rosemont Community Association Parking Lot.
We are looking for parent volunteers to help with the Walk to School Day, either by helping mark the routes, being a walking leader or being a traffic monitor. If you’re able to join us, please sign up using this link. Any questions about volunteering can be directed to kgschoolcouncil@gmail.com
