Oct. 16-20 Update | Well-Being Series, Secret Path Week, Collaborative Response Meetings, Halloween
Dear families of King George School,
At King George School, our focus always is on the safety and well-being of every one of our students, so that they feel a sense of belonging at school and have optimum conditions for success in their learning. We know that there is a lot happening in the world, and we want to assure you that our school community is a neutral place of safety, kindness and compassion for all students, staff and families.
Child and Youth Well-Being Online Series
The Calgary Board of Education is inviting all families and caregivers to join in an online series focusing on child and youth well-being. These sessions are hosted in partnership with Alberta Health Services and will explore topics such as vaping, brain development, mental health, and sexual health.
These sessions are offered free of charge and provide information, resources, helplines, and services to support healthy child and youth development.

Secret Path Week – October 17 – 22
Secret Path Week is a national movement commemorating the legacies of Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack. King George School is a Downie & Wenjack Fund Legacy School, as we have made a commitment to recognize Secret Path Week each year and educate our school community about the history of residential schools. Students will be going on a walk to Confederation Park on Thursday, October 19th to commemorate the Walk for Wenjack and Chanie’s legacy and raise awareness of the true history of residential schools. Students will also participate in various classroom activities to learn more about reconciliACTION.
Collaborative Response Meetings
We are working through our first round of Collaborative Response Meetings. Each grade team meets with admin and support staff to determine the best support for all learners and create actions for those students receiving targeted support. We are monitoring the progress of our students over the next few weeks and will meet again as a Collaborative Response Team at the end of November. Parents will receive a learning update at the Student Learning Conferences at the end of November.
Halloween Costume/Dress Up Day
On Tuesday October 31, we will have Halloween dress up day at school. Staff and students are encouraged to wear costumes. The type of costume should be considered for ages 5-11 and not include weapons, fearful, violent, gory attire, full face masks or promote cultural appropriation. Students must come to school dressed up already and these costumes should also be comfortable to wear all day. Please note that there will be no dress up at school on the day of the family dance. We understand that some families would like to share candy with their child’s class. Please do not send candy to school for distribution as we are not permitted to do this.
