Nov. 6-10 Update | Remembrance Day, Veterans Food Bank, Digital Citizenship, Artist Exhibit, Conferences

Dear families,

This week, many of our students and staff wore costumes to school on Tuesday. We had a lot of fun! Next week is a short week as we head into our first fall break. We hope that your child(ren) enjoy this time.

Remembrance Day & Indigenous Veterans Day

Over the upcoming week, students will be learning more about Remembrance Day and all veterans, including Indigenous veterans, who have sacrificed their lives for Canada. Wednesday, Nov 8 is National Indigenous Veterans Day where we recognize the contributions of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples who have contributed military service to our country.

On Wednesday Nov 8, students will also participate in a Remembrance Day assembly to honour all veterans and pay tribute by respecting a moment of silence. We encourage students that are part of Scouts, and Girl Guides to wear their uniforms for the assembly. Unfortunately, we are not able to welcome families to this assembly due to our gym capacity. Thank you for your understanding.

Indigenous Veterans Food Bank

Our school will be collecting food and other household items for the Veterans Food Bank of Calgary. This is a yearly drive at King George School, and we appreciate the donations that come in. Please consider donating to this cause between November 15 and November 30. Here is a list of urgently needed items for you to consider if you are able to donate. Only send non-perishable items to school. If you wish to donate a perishable item, please drop it off directly to 4619 6 St NE #1 (office hours are included on their website). Thank you!

Technology Use and Digital Citizenship

We want to remind families that our school has a strict no phone policy. This includes using phones in the building, on our school grounds, or on the bus. If your child requires a phone to communicate with you after school, it must remain in their backpacks throughout the day. If your child is found using their digital device at school and/or on the bus, they will be asked to hand it over to the adult in charge for the duration of the day and/or bus ride.

Student access to social media (ex. Instagram, TikTok, Youtube Channels) during the day is not permitted. This follows the CBE Student Code of Conduct and Digital Citizenship in the CBEWelcoming, Caring, Respectful and Safe Learning and Work Environments. If your child has a social media channel, please monitor their account and ensure that your child does not have any content containing our students.

As a school, we work on a Digital Citizenship Plan each year to support students' use of technology. Our goals this year focus on being respectful, safe, and involved users of technology. You can read our Digital Citizenship Plan for the 2023-2024 school year here

Alberta Society of Artists Exhibit November 20 – December 13

We will have the Niitsitapi Pi'kssii (Blackfoot Fancy Beings) art exhibit, from the Alberta Society of Artists Exhibits, on display in the Learning Commons from November 20th to December 13th. This is an exhibition featuring artworks that depict animals, or fancy beings, significant to Blackfoot culture by two contemporary Blackfoot artists, Ryan Jason Allen Willert and Kalum Teke Dan. This exhibit will support our school community in working towards our TRC Commitment, by learning from indigenous artists. Parents are welcome to view this exhibit during Student Learning Conferences on November 23 and 24.

Student Learning Conferences November 23 & 24

Student Learning Conferences are an opportunity for you to see your child's progress in relation to the Curricular or Program of Study outcomes at this time in the school year. During the meeting, you will see some of your child's learning evidence and be able to ask questions to your child's teacher. Mme Suzanne and Mme Claire will be available for conferences so you can learn more about how your child is doing in music and phys-ed.  The Student Learning Conferences will be on November 23 from 3:15 PM – 7:30 PM and November 24 from 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM. Conference Booking will be available starting Thursday November 16 at 5:00 pm. Please log into your MyCBE account to book a conference time.
