KGS Families, 

This week, students engaged in meaningful learning and reflection as we recognized Truth and Reconciliation Week and Treaty 7 Day. Through classroom discussions, learning experiences, and opportunities for reflection, students demonstrated thoughtful knowledge, curiosity, empathy, and a genuine interest in learning about Indigenous histories, cultures, languages, and perspectives. As a school community, we continue to deepen our commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action by intentionally engaging student voice in shaping the actions we will take moving forward. We are proud of the respect, openness, and care our students have shown as they explore these important learnings together. 

We would like to give a big shout out to all parents/guardians who volunteered for our Fun Lunch on Thursday, and to all who responded to our call for more help on Thursday morning.  Thank you for helping our students to have a successful first Fun Lunch of the year.  We are so grateful.   

Orange Shirt Day and King George’s TRC Commitment to Action 

As part of our commitment to ongoing learning and action, King George staff spent time this week reviewing and refining our school's Truth and Reconciliation Commitment to Action for the 2026-27 school year. This commitment will help guide our work throughout the year as we continue to honour Indigenous ways of being, belonging, knowing, and doing. Our Commitment to Action will be posted on our school website by September 29. 

On Tuesday, September 29, students and staff are encouraged to wear orange in recognition of Orange Shirt Day and the message that Every Child Matters. Students will participate in learning activities, and our school community will also come together for a Truth and Reconciliation Assembly.

Literacy and Numeracy Screenings 

Beginning in the 2026/2027 school year, schools are required to conduct literacy and numeracy screenings to all kindergarten to grade 5 children and students.    

Literacy and numeracy are essential skills that develop in the critical early years of education. These foundational skills ensure success in later years of a student's education and in later life. Screening children’s and students’ learning in literacy and numeracy in their early years provides critical information to teachers, parents, and Alberta Education and Childcare to help children and students get additional support if they need it.

Climbing Trees on CBE School Property 

We know that climbing trees can be an enjoyable part of childhood, and we recognize that families may have different perspectives on whether tree climbing is appropriate. Recently, however, we have noticed a significant increase in students climbing trees on school property during and after school hours. As our school trees are still relatively young, several branches have been cracked or broken in recent weeks and have required pruning and maintenance, with those costs having to be covered by the School Council. For both safety reasons and to help protect these trees, we ask that students not climb trees on school property, and refrain from hanging on or breaking branches (no matter the size) off our trees and plants. Our school trees need to remain a safe, healthy, and thriving part of our natural areas for everyone to enjoy.  

School Council Corner 

  • It is every parent's responsibility to keep students at KG safe. This includes during drop-off and pick-up. There are many children moving outside of vehicles during these times and there have been incidences where parent drivers nearly run over students. Parents are reminded that their comfort and convenience while driving is not a priority over the safety and well-being of students.  

Consider parking a block or two from the school and making a short walk to drop- off your student. If using the Kiss n’ Go along 9th street N.W., is your only option, plan for it to take time and be crowded. Your patience is expected.

  • *Mark your calendars* Walk and Roll to School Day! (Wednesday, October 7) 

Walk and Roll to School Day is a fun event promoting safe and active travel. Join KG families as we walk and roll to school together! There are several starting points you can join where volunteers will be ready to bike and walk with students to school. Parents are welcome, or students can join on their own.   

Bike Bus:  

The Bike Bus leaves at 7:40 AM at 2nd Street and 21st Ave NW: Bike Bus map.  

Walking Train:  

Meet at any of the locations below at 7:35 AM for a 7:40 AM departure. If you would like to lead one of the' walking trains',
