Traffic Safety

Ensuring our students get to school safely is everyone’s responsibility. Please be mindful of crosswalks, parking rules and speed limits when you are near our schools, especially during the morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal times.

Traffic Safety Reminders from The City of Calgary

The City wants to remind and encourage anyone who is driving children to school to operate their vehicles safely and responsibly. Parents and guardians are reminded not to park where it’s prohibited during drop off and pick up times, such as blocking crosswalks, laneways and private driveways.

Pick up and drop off times can get quite busy. Give yourself extra time to navigate safely around schools, whether you are walking, wheeling, or driving. For those who drive, help alleviate congestion by parking a block or two away and walking in, wherever possible.

Talk to your kids about safe travel practices like using crosswalks with patrols, looking all ways before crossing the street and not jaywalking across the roadways as a shortcut.

Student Pick-Up

Parents must wait outside in the Naturalization Area and behind pylon perimeter for student pick-up. Students need a note in the agenda if they do not take the bus. No note in the agenda = student will take the bus.

Crosswalk Safety Patrols

We are very proud of our Safety Patrols. These Grade 4 and 5 students are trained by a designated Calgary Police Service constable, who works very closely with our patrol team and teacher supervisors throughout the school year, as well as with the Alberta Motor Association (AMA). The job of Safety Patrollers is to help students to cross the street safely before and after school at the intersection of 9th Street and 21st Avenue N.W. from 7:45 to 8:00 am and 2:30 to 2:45 pm.

Remember that we control pedestrians, not vehicle traffic. Therefore, we ask parents to refrain from jay-walking, as we are training our students to use the crosswalk safely. Drivers must respect the pylons and signs that are set up to cordon off areas where parking is not permitted. This ensures patrollers have a clear ‘line of sight’ so they know when it is safe to step out onto the street.

The police constable does watch for traffic violations during crosswalk times. Patrollers do not operate in extreme weather conditions and when the temperature and/or the wind chill reaches -20°C.

Morning Kiss and Go

We have established a "Kiss and Go" lane on 9th street adjacent to the Naturalization Area, for parents who are dropping their child to school and who do not need to park and walk their child to the compound. This lane is strictly used for driving up, putting your car in park, kissing your child goodbye, ensuring they get out of the car safely, and safely driving away. Parents are not permitted to park their car and leave their car unattended in this lane. We appreciate your cooperation in keeping all students safe and ensuring smooth traffic flow on 9th street. There is ample street parking available if you wish to walk into the school grounds with your child.

Parking Lot is Off Limits

We understand parents’ frustration regarding parking and drop-off of students around our school. A reminder that dropping off students using the main staff parking lot and the one on 9th street are not permitted. We appreciate your cooperation in not parking there.
